Desert and Snowy mountain

Australia is a country of great natural beauty – often referred to as the ‘lungs’ of the world, thanks to its enormous desert, snowy mountains and bountiful rainforest. The country’s rugged landscape is protected by 2,700 national parks and reserves covering 4 million acres. Travelers who visit Australia won’t be disappointed by its diversity: from magnificent beaches and sky-scraping cliffs in Sydney and Byron Bay to sand dunes and ancient rainforests in Kakadu National Park.

Australia, a large island continent located in the south-eastern hemisphere, has a total land area of 7.6 million square kilometers. It is bordered by Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to the north, east and west respectively; the Pacific Ocean to the east; its only land borders are with South Australia to the west and North Queensland to the north-west. Australia shares land borders with New Zealand to the southeast; the world’s smallest continent over an area of about 14 million km² and it also has many islands that attract 21 million tourists a year.

Aboriginal people

The first Australians showed great promise of a physically, culturally and socially diverse nation. The land was originally home to red-skinned "Aboriginal people". They did not have written records made by the first three European explorers. The continent was empty and quiet when they arrived in 1800's. At that time most of the inhabitants of Australia were made up of Aboriginal people who inhabited it since 40,000 years ago. The first European explorers landed on Sydney Cove in 1788.

Its landscape is dominated by volcanic peaks such as Uluru/Ayers Rock and Mount Kosciuszko, which make up part of the eternal fire of the Outback. Australia's continental shelf is around 2 million kilometers at its longest point, so it borders with Asia and Antarctica in both longitude and latitude -- just like New Zealand and Tasmania.
